Title: The Laying Line.
Post by: John Gold on May 26, 2011, 09:48:33 AM
I like to 'lay' horses for small stakes and have made some money out of it.

Basically, laying a horse means that you expect it to lose. The company 'betfair' is a betting exchange which is similar to traditional bookmakers except it also gives gamblers the chance to lay.

It is much easier to find losers than winners in my opinion.

The trick is to find short priced favourites who you think can't win and lay them. That way, your risk is minimal.

If you fancy a horse at 2.0 (1/1) to get beat, you may be prepared to lay £20. If the horse actually wins, someone on the exchange who has accepted your lay and therefore backed the horse to win will get your £20.
If the horse loses, you will get £20 from the backer.

Betfair makes money by taking a small percentage of all winning bets.

I don't like laying horses at anything above 3.0 (2/1) A loss here and there can wipe out your profits. It is a case of selective laying in my opinion.

So here are todays lays. All these are UK races.

3.40 brighton. bakoura (13/8) This is its current price.

6.45 wetherby. o'callaghan strand (5/4)

6.55 newcastle. dubai dynamo (7/4)

7.40 sandown. workforce (11/8)

8.15 sandown. fury (7/4)

9.10 newcastle. smarkand (2/1)

I expect to make a nice profit laying all of those today.

The betfair site explains all about laying if you are not sure of how it all works.

Betfair is the biggest gambling exchange in the world and the liquidity in the markets is such that you will never have a problem getting your bets matched unless you are betting in extremely large sums. (nothing for me to worry about there  ;D)

Well I did not end day 1 with a 100% record but managed to make a profit which is the name of the game.

The results were as follows:

3.40 brighton. bakoura  WON 2/1. (that was not the start I wanted, lol)

6.45 wetherby. o'callaghan's strand LOST 5/4.

6.55 newcastle. dubai dynamo LOST 10/11.

7.40 sandown. workforce WON 1/1.

8.15 sandown. fury LOST 7/4.

9.10 newcastle. smarkand LOST 13/8.

So 4 out of 6 lost which resulted in a profit on the day. Most of the lays will be in the 1/1 - 6/4 range. This will ensure a long term profit for any followers.

I'm looking into laying on horses but with small stakes to start with. I was wondering if you guys could point me to the right direction here.
