How many people here can honestly say that they have self control when it comes to gambling?
I'm ashamed to admit it, but I have not ONCE had a gambling session where if I lose my bankroll I would then walk out and leave. I ALWAYS head for the ATM and get more money out.
Any tips on learning self control?
dont take credit cards with u :) and hammer it in your head that u will lose more if u continue.. wait for a day then try again, it is worth it
Toey, my advice: use "grind" systems, bring into play those systems which require concentrating and human-based "pen and paper" tracking mandatory. It helps to have something to guide your bets. Do not bet with every spin, bet with more infrequent triggers (i.e. use the balance/imbalance methodology which will have you tracking for a deviation prior to laying the chips) and learn to have your progression resolved with a positive streak which becomes your reward for all the manual tracking (for instance an under-represented location gains momentum and then you cancel your previous losses, turn balance into the winning side and reap the benefits of devoting patience to "hunting" that location).

If you want to gain self-control go deep into the parachuting methodology, the only most slow thing than Lw's playing I know. Not the "36-unit parachute" or the "Grand parachute", but the whole parachuting methodology which strategically uses each location's payout to create upward spikes with the lesser units and will fine-tune your ability to play as strategically as possible.
With the whole parachuting methodology I mean using only 1 unit per spin, the bank is like this:
Units/cycle | Betting Location |
2 | Even chance |
3 | Dozen/column |
6 | double-street/line. |
9 | Corner/Quad |
12 | Single street |
18 | Split. |
Total unit requirement as bank = 50 units. Target: 5 to 10 units per session or breaking even.
How to attack? A good trigger is when the most under-represented targeted location hits, then you enter and play a full cycle on it. ...We know everything which has to happen will happen, but that particular bet location is the one which has more "statistical pressure" to concentrate appearances, so it makes sense for timeline players.
When you hit a location, you re-evaluate the balance and according to how the session is developing you choose to take more risk or go more conservative. Example: you hit and you are -2 units from previous high, if you are in a clearly positive tram where hits are coming your way easily, then you can risk betting 1 unit on a column/dozen as one hit will provide you of exactly +2 units and recoup... or if at this particular tram you are struggling and barely can make a hit, as soon as you get -2 you better refuge yourself at the even chance, which will give you +1 and require two hits, but has more coverage than a single dozen.
It isn't an exact science, and it is precisely what makes you more focused and -yes- to execute more awareness and personal self-control in the game.
This methodology is the queen grind of the grinds. You need proper tracking and you have to wait for the best moments to perform your "attack". This helps build patience to your personal gaming arsenal, which is by all means something valuable and training that "inner muscle" will enrich your life in other non-gambling aspects.

Hi Toey
You have nothing to be ashamed of mate. You have already isolated the problem and now you can move forward. Boo Ray is right never ever take credit cards to the casino. Taking them is a double penalty. One you have already lost, and now you are going to try to recover your loss by using money from the casino's ATM. Two if you look at the fee the casino charges you to take out that money against your credit card it is insane. I have seen ATM machines in casinos with a 20% service fee attached to them, so now you are already losing and now you are losing even more by playing the ATM machine.
No one wins all the time. That is a fact. If someone says they win all the time they have either been very very lucky or are bold faced liars. Once you get your head around this fact that you will lose sometimes half the battle is won. Most people lack discipline, and only you know where the joy stops, and the pain begins when gambling.. It is not you against the casino, it is you against yourself. You can be your own worst enemy.
So how do we defend against our own short falls. First make a list of all the things you did right during the session. Then make a list of all the things you did wrong during the session. This might seem elementary, but it is essential if you are going to over come problems, and be on the road to being a succesful roulette player. Once you have made your list, take a honest approach, and think how you can improve on the things you did wrong and try to eliminate them. Then look at the things you did right and try to improve on them also.
Discipline is a very personal thing. You do not aquire it over night, it is something that you gain over time. But if you keep notes pro and con on every session you will improve yourself and your game at the same time. Just take it one step at a time and you will do fine. :)
best regards
LeBear
Thanks for all the replies, I really appreciate it :)
I am tempted to give up gambling, but I fear that I may break my promise, so I won't even make the promise at all (I've made it once before).
For those who have achieved discipline, can I ask how long it took?
Hi Toey
Discipline is a constant battle of greed and fear. Everyone is different. Once you have overcome the greed and fear factor you still must deal with many other elements of discipline. How long does it take to develope discipline? A lifetime, as it is constantly changing due to the conditions of the present situation!
best regards,
LeBear
The only way to aquire discipline in gambling is to treat it like a job. Have win goals and loss limits and stick to them religiously. When I reach my win goal in units, it never occurs to me to stay one minute longer. Realize your not there to have a good time or be entertained, you're there to work. If you can't so this, you have no business in the casino.
Spike and LeBear are right on the money...the only thing I would add is good & bad habits are formed from good and bad habits. Brilliant huh? What I am saying it the best way to teach oneself a good habit it to force yourself to set a reasonable goal like 10% which is usually very easy without a system and walk off the table take a 20 minute / half hour break and try another table and hit your 10% and walk off again. While that may only be 10 chips it's better that any bank rate. That "Winning Feeling" becomes habit forming and isn't that what we are looking for....good habits. However there is no substitute for studying your game and practice.
QuoteSpike and LeBear are right on the money...
And you sure too :D
Welcome to the forum Richie, may we have plenty and productive roulette talk with you mate.

As I have recently observed with myself. After a few losses, you want to recoup the bankroll with more cash. It is painful for me to walk away, but I realize it is the best thing to do in a losing session, (2 consecutive losses, or 2 losses out of three tries.)
Hi Toey
I gave it some more thought. You want to know how long it takes to gain discipline. I will let you know as soon as I find out. However, you should be very pleased at yourself to admit you have this very common weakness. I think we all have greed to one extent or another. DISCIPLINE = Will power & will power is important to long term and consistent winning. MAINTAIN THE DISCIPLINE NOT TO BET HEAVY UNTIL THE VALUE IS THERE. Find a system....Systems have a specific set of rules and playing by those rules is discipline, as well as teaches discipline. Random betting with no plan leaves us to exposed to chasing losses. Set reasonable goals...for example probably everyone wins 10% profit from their buy in but they rarely quit at +10%. Before you know it they lose it all and then some. I know from experience. If a bank gave us 10% we'd run out thinking they made a big error. Why not be happy with small 10% wins and leave. You'd be surprised how habit forming leaving with even a small profit is and how quickly it adds up. Try it you'll like it. Winning is simply the natural product of a sound strategy implemented properly by a self-disciplined bettor. If you can take this magic formula and live by it, you will win. Establish exit points / win and loss walks and stick by them. Leave only after 1 or 2 wins. Most players lose because they lack the KNOWLEDGE, SYSTEM, DISCIPLINE and the BANKROLL to win at Roulette. Without any one of these you shouldn't gamble at all. Since you have made the biggest step..."Coming out in public and admitting you don't have discipline you are ahead of most of us. Now take the next step and try it. I don't like bringing ego to the casino but here it could be helpful. How do you think we look to others losing our buyin and then losing more & more. ANYONE PINEAPPLE CAN LOSE BUT WINNING TAKES DISCIPLINE. If you learn to detach yourself from your emotions then you can, theoretically at least, become a highly disciplined profit-generating machine.....How does that sound? Nah...I don't believe it either. :) However, discipline couldn't hurt and in fact will definitely help. No matter what kind of gambling you enjoy, don't fall for the idea that winning is related to the amount of money you bet. Many people think that they'll become successful if they bet $10 instead of $1, or $50 instead of $10. Sure, a guy betting $50 a pop for the first time might hit a "lucky streak" and make a few hundred, but over the long term his bottom line will only reflect his skills and discipline not his bankroll. If you can't make a profit betting in cents, don't think that you'll fare any better by betting dollars. If you can't spot the sucker at the table within the first 5 minutes, then it may be you. One undisciplined move and you could be cooking Squirrels under a bridge somewhere.
When I go to a casino, I just make sure I have no plastic money with me. Only an ID and cash.
When my money it is gone, and I can't do anything else then leave.
I know when you lose, you start thinking ''damn, I want my money back'' and you'll start walking through the casino ''Lets cash in some more and get my money back''. And how longer you're thinking abouth it how more you'd like to play.
But I had plastic money with me a few times, and didn't gave myself to it.
You just need to say no to yourself, how hard it is. And when you can say no, even if you have the plastics with you, that means you can control yourself. And that's the most important don't you think.
I lost it on Wild Jack yesterday. When the timer started messing up, my mind went out the window. I went back and looked at my film and I was missing bets right and left and making bets not called for.
Had I got my mind right, I would have stopped at the very first sign that something was not right.
This is why I can't play progressions. When something goes a tiny bit wrong, my mind becomes foggy and my blood pressure rises and I'm a basket case.
I must learn to walk......

On my way I am working whit system allways...and if not go on long term then system is not working and must find better way or other way...this is what I am doing threw the time. I am not looking for luck!
I do not say for me I am gambler...i give my head away and only playing by the system. It can not be done something by hard way and go throw the wall.
My uncle was a gambler and has lost all his money and house and wife becouse of that. What is funny is becouse he was reparing those machines...stupid I think.
For me is chalenge to find the wright system that will bring some extra money for me...i am working on that for now 3 years,haha...3 years man ;D But maybe I will find it...maybe I will working on that all my life I do not know...but not quit!
It is fun...and it must be fun. I have lose some money...but I will lose it anyway...for drinks or for women...who cares...this is my chalenge and nobody will take it from me. Must be way...must be![smiley=angry.gif]
When your fillings are controled then you are good...if not you are their slave you are lossing.
This is I think big school for self-control! It is hard school...
If you are not good learner then you are loosing.
Money is if you look other way only numbers...and here on roullete and around you are just playing whit numbers...it is hard to not to fall in whit your fillings and give money that is for bills or something like that.
If you are there...then it is hard to come out of that hole...big black hole!
Then is better not to play this game it will kill you and destroy you.
Casinos are made for taking our money not to give it to us...and we are fighters...fighters to find the way to take them money and win not battle...but war! [smiley=wink.gif]
Some people will die in this war...but some of them will win in long term...you can not win if your fillings are controling you...this is way to lose and die man!!! Give away your fillings and work on systems and not luck...if systems is not working for you then find new other way...not trying to proof your self that system is working if it is not working ;)
For you TwoCatSam...i am verry sorry...you are killer do not forget that...take it it was your bad day yesterday ;)
Wish you all the best of the best
Thanks, Legend...
I'll make 'em pay!!

I had the Same Sam. A guy who was messing in the live chat. My attention was away from the table and I started to miss bets. But when you play on a casino floor in a casino you need to stay calm to, and not be distracted.
Bad to hear. Did you loose al your money including your own or only your winnings?
Jur
Just some winnings but I got half of it back today.
Well, two times something bad happened on Wild Jack. One was a phone call that had nothing to do with them.
I noticed my mental attitude had changed; I was flustered. And I quit.
I went back later and got even with them and surged 100 bucks ahead to boot.
I made a step towards professionalism.

When I was a Boy Scout I was led to believe
that a cold shower was good for times when
one was likely to lost self-control.
Or perhaps that was for something else.
It's sixty years ago so perhaps I've forgotten.....
Hi Proofreadeds2000
That's a very good policy especially if you are paying the outside with a large house advantage on many numbers against you. However if playing a large number of inside numbers and re-betting the same ones at least until they hit I would re consider and might have an advantage (believe it or not) after 2 losses in a row. Many will disagree, as is their right, but may not necessarily be right.
I must add though that a reasonable progression must be added to stay ahead of the losses. Takes courage but does pay off.
RICHIECHIPS
Thanks for all the input, I've enjoyed reading every one of them.
Few nights ago I lost control again, making continuous trips to the ATM and losing $850 using my method of covering two out of four sectors. I then decided to get aggressive and use $100 chips on the supabets method, where I won $1200.
Very risky, and I am very lucky it paid off. Will try not to let that happen again. Still working on self control. It's just hard for me to walk away and accept a loss.
Hi People,
If you have a robust strategy that you 'know' will win consistently (not always) then you should try my approach.
I treat each attack on the wheel as a session.
I aim to win $1,000 over 10 sessions.
I wait patiently for a time to strike and place a maxium $250 bet on my two chosen columns.
If I lose then I've had a $500 losing session.
I start the next session exactly the same as the first.
Wait for the 'ideal' time to place a large bet of $250 on two columns.
If I win I have won $250 profit.
Over 10 sessions I would usually lose only one, maybe two at the most ever. (not showing off)
Two losing sessions of $500 = $1,000 loss
Eight winning sessions of $250= $2000 profit
$2,000 - $1,000 = $1,000 overall profit.
One of the secrets is to not panic with a losing session. If you have faith in your strategy then it will pull you through in the long term.
I play at a live casino with a European wheel and always place a $15 insurance bet on the zero with my $250 bets on two columns.
There are other ways to stake this approach nolinksLwwLLww but more of that later. Remember the longer you stay at the table betting the more apt you are to lose to the dreaded House Edge.
Kind regards
Steve
