Hi People.

I am very interested to see the figure of how many people on this forum belive if roulette IS random or NOT random.

Simple poll, simple question.

Thanks guys!

James.

RANDOM:
lacking any definite plan or order or purpose; governed by or depending on chance; "a random choice"; "bombs fell at random"; "random movements"

The question depends on context. In the above example, do the bombs really fall at random places? Of course they don't. They fall where they do because of physical factors THAT CAN BE MEASURED.

Roulette is no different. Consider all the data that is available at the roulette wheel. Can any of this be used to increase the accuracy of predictions? OF COURSE. Amateurs will look at roulette and say "whoa how could you know the ball was gonna do that?". They dont know any better.

It is not hard to predict where a little ball will land, at least with enough accuracy to overcome the small house edge (unfair payouts).

Yep. Every thing has a cause an affect. Random is just an invalid meaning to me.

Hi ReDsQuaD,

If roulette appears random to someone then it's the same to them as if it was random...even though it's not random.  I voted but I'm not sure which way.

Roulette on an unprejudiced  real wheel is 100% random. Computer RNG roulette is kinda random.

Most pepole have 37 degree of freedom and some has less  :sarcastic:

On what ground breaking research do you base this claim?

What is kinda random?

Its not dependably random in the extreme short term, where we place our bets. It only looks random in the long term and what good it that. Play an RNG to your hearts content, its your money.

If that's the case, you will become a zillionair! If Random has no meaning to you, you can break any code, predict any event, break every casino, hell, create a computer that surpasses quantum computer performance, break the laws of nature!

Random is actually very simple: in the case of casino games it just means that every single outcome has the same probability. There are many probability distributions, in casino games we are looking at uniform distributions, (one of the forum members once claimed that roulette is not random because the pattern looked different from the clicks of a geiger teller, well, radioactive decay is random, but follows a different distribution!).

This again leads to patterns (believe it or not, but if there are no patterns, it is not random!!!!! so in roulette, if you never see 18 EC's in a row (or more, or less) - something is wrong), but the distribution of these patterns is random again. So whether you believe it or not: random is random and there is nothing you can do about that.

In physics there was, and sometimes still is amongst students, a discussion if the universe is deterministic (per definition not random). The thing is that even if it is, the number of variables and combinations are so high the a statistical approach is the most useful one (which in the end culminated in quantum theory, once that theory was established, the deterministic view was abandoned by most). This is again hard to understand, hence Einsteins remark that "God doesn't play dice". And this remark my fellow forum members is exactly the remark you make and will make from here to eternity if you claim that you can read random or that random is in the eye of the beholder. Or that random is not random, or that you have to wait for 10 reds and than bet. you're actually paraphrasing Albert Einstein (and by the way, also the creationists).

Once you've accepted that random is random, suddenly new insights become possible (like quantum mechanics and evolution theory) and you will notice that all may not be lost: at least a universe of new approaches suddenly pops up. But you have to go through the wormhole of acceptance first, and not look back. I find that not looking back is the most difficult one.
