Title: We're back!
Post by: VLSroulette on January 23, 2009, 12:50:23 AM
Thanks for all the concerned people who asked about the status of our site via email today. This forum is really part of people's lives!

But there's something. As we grow, our current shared hosting can't handle properly traffic swarms on peak times.

I truly hope we can get to have the support and we can actually upgrade to a better server for next billing cycle. So far there are only 3 people as registered sponsors :-\ $5/mo top popular package (which is okay, if many join at this level, we still can make it)!

I still got the hopes up for the community of users to take action and register before this month ends. Right now, what matters is: WE ARE BACK ONLINE!

Now that I'm a forum admin myself, this reminds of the rouletteforum.net wipeout which led to people ultimately migrate, including myself, as it isn't funny to have all of one's message just gone.

RSR was blaming a hacker for his database corruption, but realistically, if it were a hacker, a ransom would have been asked or the database would have disappeared completely from server to make the most damage possible; now I realize a very likely reason is a simple shared account at a weak server plan can't handle traffic swarms and too many simultaneous requests can make it look like a sort of "attack". No hacker needed!

When I asked hosting guy about why database got corrupted, he asked me: how many times it is accessed? I went whistling... [smiley=2/whistle.gif]
It is simple: a single webpage queries the database more than once to be generated. Messages, Avatars, Signatures, etc... all come from querying the database. Say we have a traffic swarm at this current service and 100 people come at once (record is 130); say a page takes 12 database queries x 100 = 1200 simultaneous database queries at once and it sure looks like a sort of attack! Besides, the usual shared hosting plan at peak times is also processing the load coming from every other hosted site, so positively a single site's functioning gets affected by others. This is why people migrates to dedicated plans, even if it isn't a full-blown server, at least locking up server resources and have guaranteed RAM and guaranteed processing power at peak times.

You know what? Back in the day I offered to fix steve's forum database manually but he didn't want to give me access to it (I understand it now too, as while encrypted, someone could crack the passes as those are standard, also member's email addresses are plain text.  I wouldn't give forum's database to anyone either, thanks god so far it has been within my reach to do what's required).

Now I can relate to everything said back in the day:

QuoteEbrand: "I'm sorry but that does not add up - a couple of days back you said all the posts were still on the server but were not being displayed for some reason - now you say they have gone. "

RSR: "They have not 'gone'. They are on the server but the file that lists them was attacked by a hacker who knew exactly what they were doing. They knew exactly what file to attack ... Who knows who it was or why."

As an admin, I understand this one. "Why my site". Big conspiration theory! Casino-paid hackers trying to shut us down: but reality is this isn't happening.

What I can relate to is: the database is "filled" and by the amount of MB in there you realize there's data inside, but still no data is being "listed".
Solution is to reinstall and manually insert what you have into the database. Of course, you need to have a backup. No backup, you're screwed. Now I'm a database backup junkie! LoL

Daily database backup for VLSroulette.com now, thank you. [smiley=im/teeth_smile.gif]

Great effort Victor! Keep it up!

So glad everything is restore...

At the messages table we are 100% good, but actually not *everything* is back. Some functionality is still down and won't be restored until we move from server (i.e. related topics, and other).

Anyway, we can live this way for some days! Better to have less functionality and all messages back, rather than the other way around!

Hey marven, you don't need to have a paypal account. Hit subscription button and look for:

"Don't have a PayPal account? Use..."

At the lower part of joining page.

Let's PM about it if you wish dear Marven.

Guys thanks to everyone for your supportive message. This makes my heart so well.

Here's hoping 2-0-9 gets to be the best year for us as a community!

Best regards.

Your friend,
Victor

Question for you Victor >>> Have you considered having a VERY plain site, nothing fancy, similar to GG or LTW? I'm saying no avatars, no chat ETC. NOTHING extra. Ken

Well ken, a plain site would also mean we as a community are pretending to be plain cheaps! I know we aren't like that. Nothing wrong in having self-supported goodies for our own pleasure.. So, plain site = that's a negative answer in my consideration.

...What would be wrong (at least in my wife's eye) is for me to carry the burden alone of a full-blown server to serve the community. I'm okay affording small to medium plans on my own (as a matter of fact I'm continuing with giving my quota as usual), but anything in the ranges of "dedicated" (be it locking partial resources or a dreamy full-blown one) I feel the right thing is for all of us to contribute.

I'm okay and will surely enjoy devoting the time to code and offer the features, but the maintenance of a large-scale site for the benefit of all of us, should come from all of us! :)

Let's see how much support we can get for our February 1st upgrade.

It would be a shame for our study community to be stuck at the text-only level forever I say.

This I wrote at another board regarding this:

"I have a dream fellows, to build a well-oiled community which self-supports. We as the roulette study community could be stuck at the text-in/text-out level forever, which is a possibility, sure it is!
But we could also use some extra features like having automated online testing bots (open to script submissions) gathering actuals from public sources and generating data and charts on a daily basis for us to compare and redirect newcomers to see results from an always-increasing base of actual systems'results. That sure could add for educating about Martingale and such systems' reality.

We can be hosting challenges broadcasting results realtime, or -why not?- having our own community gaming server for all of us to hang out and "share table" while we chat (to be used also as a session-record & playback engine with comments to help at the didactics of a system) and have other goodies which can get us to enjoy our studies and online experience at the next level.
Of course, there will always be the crew telling: "We only needed text 10 years ago and we will need text-only 10 years from now". Perhaps they are right, people who don't like features can always choose not using them, but for those who can enjoy the features I think they have to be there available.

It has to do with naturally evolving in time. We could host a roulette challenge the text-only way: one poster calls the numbers and the rest of participants call their bets... but wouldn't it be nicer for us to participate using a real-time simulator instead?"

That's all about it, to evolve.

Also -as a funny remark- I think some features text-only really can't provide. i.e. I won't "share table" with the fellows saying: Now I bet 20 on red... screeeeeeetch (ball rolling)... 17 black", we could do better than that! [smiley=im/teeth_smile.gif]

Cheers!

That would suck. Than this forum will become a dump like GG.

Good that we're back Victor. I hope many sponsors will join. We have to make it work together.

Nice to hear about your support dear Kingpin; it is reassuring to know this site means a lot to the roulette community and we are all together in this. With enough support, we should be granted to be running smoothly for the long run. Only a few more days left to upgrade! Now you know part of it thanks to you

Thanks a bunch Matty, be certain there is more to come at this site; right now working on a matrix tool for the fellows to be able to share & illustrate easily their matrix findings

Studying in group surely is better!
