Poll
Question: Should the Member be able to edit their posts anytime they want.
Option 1: YES votes: 17
Option 2: NO votes: 8
Title: editing posts
Post by: simon on October 06, 2009, 05:56:52 AM
I am confused as to when you can and cannot edit your own posts.  Sometimes the tools to edit are there (Modify and the pencil thing), and sometimes not.  I thought maybe these disappear after someone posts a message after yours in the thread, but then there will be a thread where I was the last to post, and still last (most recent, that is), but these tools are no longer there.  Is there a time limit or something for editing your own posts (even if you were last in thread to post)?  Because yesterday I could edit my own post (edit tools there), and today I cannot (edit tools gone.)  Confused.

Hi Simon.

Mate Victor is the one that has to answer this Question for You....
but I think He put a time limit on it.

Hi Lanky, thanks, yuh I think it must be a 24hr time limit or something.  It was actually my last post to you in the Money Management thread I was looking at.  I kinda had one more question I wanted to throw in there.  Well hopefully catch you back in that thread...

The problem with putting on a time limit is if someone wants to update a Table. I am sure there are other times as well
when someone wants to correct something, having previously made a mistake. No doubt we will discover the reason
for the limit in due course.

Once you share something with the community, it should remain there. It wasn't uncommon for people to get mad at a poster and wipe entire threads with a dot (.) or something mean to the fellows who were reading as reference.

We've been trying several form of moderation and self-moderation and this was the most suitable one.

I think members should have control over their own posts.

It is now impossible for anyone to produce a Table of results over a period of time, as they can no longer up date them :(

Hi Forum.

The Mod crew try and do the right thing by the Members.

So then lets hold a poll on it and see what the Members want.....that would be the fair thing to do and let the Members Vote.

Hello dear friends,

I can set it up again, just please don't complain about the wiped-out threads and people NOT finding more than a dot "." or some mean message after a while when they read the threads from a long-time member :(

People come and go, and sadly the goers LOVE to wipe their threads clean, preventing the newcomers to enjoy the material, which is obviously setting us back as a whole in the community.

In my opinion nothing that is shared should be un-shared.

Regards.

Hi Guys,

I don't have a problem with anyone editing their own posts, however, as Victor has just posted, I do have a problem with the retraction of posts and especially posters putting up a new thread and then deleting it later.

A good decision, a poll will let the members decide on the issue. I voted yes

Yes members will come and go and yes some will delete their posts. The majority of happy members I am sure will want
to retain their posts and if they want to correct a mistake or delete a post, if they had a disagreement with another
member in the heat of the moment and a few days later are sorry for what they have said and want to retract their
comments, let them do so. Why keep such stuff for posterity.

Don't do it, Victor. It ruins every forum its tried on, it makes the archives worthless. Once something is posted, it should remain.. It makes thread very hard to read when people delete whole posts.

So what's currently worth keeping over at GG ;D

It's up to the members here to decide if they want complete control of their posts or not and having a poll, will democratically
decide the issue.

I have voted no but a time limit of say, 5 or 10 minutes would be ideal in my opinion.

Those members who voted no, please tell me how will it be possible to produce a Table of results, over a period of time?

I haven't had an answer to that particular problem!

Hello dear Chips.

QuoteA good decision, a poll will let the members decide on the issue.

The "Lanky Era" around here is certainly one of people's choice :)

He does take a lot of consideration for input on each and every issue of the board, even when he could easily have the final stand as main admin.

As for the middle solution I want to propose there is to grant special edit permission for some members to edit their dynamic posts on a certain board (I.e. the "EDIT YOURSELF BOARD" or something like that).

Also, let's remember we have moderators with DELETE permissions. A deletion request board where members can ask for deletion would suffice to bring human-based judgement into the equation.

I.e. a person retracting himself from some comments towards another members would be granted, yet other more abusive requests would not. This will certainly bring more to the moderating crew AND we would have the opportunity to debate deletions at the removal request thread on that board.

Regards.
Victor

Victor,

I appreciate your efforts to find a "middle solution", but I think it falls short of members being in full control of their posts.

Hopefully the results in the poll, especially if they are highly in favour of a 'Yes' vote will settle the issue.

Regards

Richard

Hi Guys.

Well those that wanted to participate should have done so already, seeing its been talked about since the 6th.

So lets say I close it 24 hours from now.

That would be 7.30 am Australian Time on the 9th of October.

I can understand Spike's POV in regards to the archives. But considering how many of these threads turn into pointless arguements, people should have the right to take their opinions and thoughts (whether past or present) elsewhere. Not to mention the fact that some of us post just before bed, and may not give the post a perfect proofread before going public. It'd be nice to adjust them the next day. I also think that when a member contributes to a gambling forum whether is be their system, methods, or anything else that they are sharing that product of their own thought process, they should have the right to remove their own posts. I don't think it is fair that a mod is the only one to remove posts, when a member is the one to have second thoughts about posting. But I'm sure as is always the case, whoever is the loudest will get their way in the end. I'm also sure if the posters here could act like adults, this issue wouldn't be a problem.

Thats a good idea. Give people 10min to change a post. I don't like the idea of changing it anytime you like because often someone will post valuable info and then decide to delete it a week later.

Since there are a LOT of moderators floating around here... why not have a system where people need to get a mods approval first? I only say this because I have had some really immature members say stuff.... mainly provocative stuff... then wait for replies, then delete/modify their original reply (theirs)... then make fun at the persons (now) illogical reply

*EDIT (pun intended :D lol) .......... RWC was the 'person' I was mainly referring too.. I understand he is a member on this forum too..... my advice... watch him!! he is a unknown quantifier

I say one should be able to edit or delete one's own posts at will. If not alot of people will think twice before posting anything. Not good.
