Title: Online Poker Tips
Post by: MattyMattz on July 31, 2008, 10:43:01 AM
Hi guys,
okay, since posting my tips the other week, I've been getting a few questions about online poker.  Hope this helps:

- Yes I play online poker
- Yes you can make good money playing online
- Yes I have withdrawn money from them with no problems
- No, I play mostly live and earn most of my money this way, although I do make a nice sum online.
- I play mostly on pokerstars (aka - jokerstars) mainly because there's always a game.  I don't think there any better/safer/smarter/more legit than any other site, it's just because they have tons of tables and tons of members - so it's easy to get a game.

Anyways, here's my first tip on how to increase a small BR online.  Sit'n'Go's...

Start by playing 6$ SnG with 6 players max.  I'd suggest even playing the Turbo games, which last about an hour.  I find these games super easy to win... just be patient.  Play only good hands (AA,KK,QQ,AK,AQ,JJ,TT).  Don't mess with the chip leader.  top 2 make money so all you need to do is out wait 4 other players.  This is my main source of income with online poker (although I don't play the 6$ buyins anymore)

Cheers,
Matt

PS - if your brave enough to play open tables, start small (.10 - .25 cent blinds) but ALWAYS start with the max buy in.  Trust me... nothing tougher than playing with 10 bucks, while the guy beside you has 40$.

Matt

Indeed, well put Matt.

Personally I disagree that SnG's are the way forward as you need to have quite a high success rate to build the BR up but thats just my experience and I know you have a lot more mate. I tend to stick to cash games now as there will always be a few people on each table prepared to call with any old rubbish.

Have you ever stepped up to the WSOP?

Regards

Clint

I couldn't agree more with you Matty! I love SNG's. That's where I make most of my poker money. I am a tournament specialist, so cash games are really not my cup of tea. But like Clint says, if you can go in with a maximum bankroll into a SMALL game, you can fund your tournament habits.

I do like playing the larger tournaments as well, but you really have to be disciplined and patient to be successful at those. And for a small entry buy-in, you could multiply it by 10 or more!

Hey Clint - thanks for your POV.  Some people love cash games.  Lately I've gotten into the habit of playing about 8 tables at once, all .50-100 blinds.  Just looking to make about 40 from each table (which, as you've put, can be quite quick) and then leave... 40x8 in sometimes 1 hrs play... nice.

Still, those people that your referring to Clint (call with any old rubbish) are lurking in the SnG's too!
As for the WSOP - I have only played once (2006) and was out on the first day... Definately want to play again though!  Have met some of the greats while playing in it (Brunson, Ferguson, Ivey, Chan... the list goes on... :)

Cheers,
Matt

That is definitely true. The Calling Stations are always fun to play. They get a big chip lead and try to wear you down, and then they collapse without cashing.

I was thinking of playing in one of the 1,500 NL Hold'em events at WSOP next year. This year, someone won $800k+ on one of those. Not a bad return!

Would love to meet some of those guys like you mentioned, and Hellmuth, Negranu, Ulliott. And Gowen, Harman, Tilly  :o

Hellmuth is a baby - although he is a great poker player.  But can't accept losing to anything but luck.  Never played against him, but my table was next to his... he'd go on like there's no tomorrow...lol.  But, that being said, one of the best out there.

Negranu is a great guy (good old Canuck!).  Offers lots of advice to any who asks.

Yeah, Hellmuth is a whiner, but I've liked him since those early days (what was it, the 1980's?) when they showed the OLD footage of the WSOP. He was so young and such a great player.

Negranu has always been one of my favorites. I can't get enough poker on TV these days. Finally got some '08 on ESPN. And GSN has a lot of poker on there lately. Poker After Dark is fun, as is Poker Superstars, High Stakes Poker, etc.

I love that FT commercial with Kid Poker playing pool and he acts all weak to the Asian guy when he has a set of Jacks and then you see him raking in all of his chips.
