Title: High Bankroll
Post by: Elbowz_10 on March 06, 2013, 08:42:01 PM
Hey i have had many arguments with my friends who play roulette and they disagree with me on the point of having a high BR and work on earning small % with less risk but they think i should play with small bankroll and try build it up which i find risky and more chance not to work as consistent as my way.

I used to play roulette and made some nice profits out of it so i know it can be done but i never really full committed to it on the scale where i can earn a living out of it and i feel i can only do this by having a good starting BR. People think I'm mad thinking that someone can make a living out of playing roulette but i suppose I'm one of the crazy few who think you can and I'm sure there is people on this who are right now.

I was wondering if anybody else has the same ambition as me or if anybody has any advice/experience with playing on high BR?

cheers

Bankroll?... the bigger the better.

Win%?... the smaller the better.

In my opinion, you are on the right track.

Welcome to the forum.

Hi Elbowz.
I first put a chip on a roulette table in 1967 and have played on and off ever since. I have never made my living as a professional player but now that I'm retired I do supplement my income by playing at two casinos close to where I live. So I suppose I now partly qualify as a professional.

I love systems: always have, always will. But in my long experience, how you play is more important that what you play. Whether you back favourite numbers, lucky numbers, numbers dictated by a system or a computer or even a late bet placed on the winning number (yes, I've seen cheats plonk a large bet on the winning number – and lose because they misread it!!), you can't win every bet. What you can do is keep records of your plays and learn from this. In my case, the way I play (and I now stick to this discipline religiously) is to set a win target, let's say 25 units. As soon as I reach this, I walk. On bad days, when nothing goes my way, as soon as I lose twice the win target amount I.e. 50 units, I walk. It doesn't take a genius to work out that if I average 2 winning sessions for every losing session, then I break even. Less than that ratio and I lose, more than that and I win. My usual play (over the long term) results in a ratio of 4:1 (4 winning sessions for each loss). If that were the end of the story, how good would that be!  However, 4:1 is an average worked out over quite a long time and in the short-term, wins and losses can clump together alarmingly. WWWWWWWWWWWWWWLLLLWWW is still 4:1 but by the end of a run of 4 losses in quick succession, it's very easy to make bad decisions. In the past I would often chase losing streaks or increase bet sizes dramatically, anything to recoup the losses. Take it from one who learned the hard way – don't do it, you'll more often than not just end up losing more.

This brings me back to the point I made earlier about sticking to a discipline, which I do now as I'm playing seriously to earn money and not just for fun or a hobby.  It also brings me back to the main point you asked about BR. Although my average win/lose ratio is 4:1 I needed to know how much the worst run of losses would cost me now that I don't deviate from my rules. From my records I found that 5 losses in a row was the worst ever. So, providing I stick to these rules I can say that using the example above of stopping after a 50 unit loss then the same worst run of 5 losses would now cost me 250 units. Since I am sure that not only will I re-experience a run of 5 losses but in all probability a lot worse than that at some point, I decided to double it to establish my BR as 500 units. My thought is that 10 losses together probably will happen eventually but fortunately it hasn't happened yet and the profit generated simply by the 4:1 ratio is now more than enough to cover even this. The longer I can maintain this average the less the losing streaks hurt – even big ones.
I hope this helps when working out what BR is right for you.
Best of luck, Agabus

Thanks Gabs, much appreciated,
i have a few systems i play but i found the more basic little systems i know the better because i can implement them when I'm at the table. I found if i just stuck to one system i saw opportunities where i could of placed a bet but didn't because i was trying to stick to my system, so know i watch everything going on at the table and build up a good knowledge of the game so that i can place bets almost after every spin.

what matters is a proper bankroll relative to the average bet. for inside bets   40 times that amount per session times 3 . for each of the mandated sessions. the object being winning 2 out of  3 sessions.

win goal 10 % per session, loss limit 25 % .leave session after 3 losses in a row.

N.D.

P.S.
I always pre-determine which system/ method I play  while at a casino .

Friends that told you this are only researches not real players.Large BR,proven method/s,small winning aim, self control and patience are the only way.
I used to play roulette and made some nice profits out of it so I know it can be done but I never really full committed to it on the scale where I can earn a living out of it and I feel I can only do this by having a good starting BR. You are quite right there.

I was wondering if anybody else has the same ambition as me or if anybody has any advice/experience with playing on high BR? Thats how I'm playing, probably from the days you weren't born as yet.
