Title: Key things to look at before making a bet
Post by: djroulette on May 03, 2009, 12:40:24 PM
Right then guys here is my first real bit about how to know what to look for when betting tennis. Women's tennis is very different to the mens so this topic will cover the main things to look at.

1. Head to head

Head to head is one of the best indicators you can get towards picking one of the two players. The reason for this being that if player 1 and player 2 had played  each other 10 times and player 1 had won 7 of them this would give him an advantage over player 2 physiologically as they know they can beat them more often than not. However do not now run away and look at a head to head record of two players see one of them as won more times than the other and back them. The other thing to look at in head to head records is how recently they have played and who won. In the example above player 1 had won 7 out of 10 times so initially you would think he has the advantage. However what if player 2 had won there last 2 meetings?? Could this change your bet?? You bet it would

2. Recent Form

Recent form is a key thing to look at when betting tennis , for most of you that don't know tennis is considered by a lot of people to be 80% mental 20% physical. If a player is on a good run of form this can make the world of difference to his confidence. I tend to look at the players last 4 tournaments played to get a good idea of how they are currently playing. If you see a player in a run of form winning his last 4 tournaments this is a good indicator that he is playing very well, however just be careful not to jump strait in as the tennis calendar is very crammed so fatigue can often mean seeds loosing to lower ranked players in earlier rounds of tournaments.

(helpful hint)

if player was in final or won the tournament the week before look to see where it was played. If the tournament finished on the sunday and the player is on court the next day somewhere quite far away this can be a great opportunity to bet against him as fatigue can play massive roles, especially after traveling.

3. History at event

Looking at a players previous results at the particular tournament can be a good indicator of how well they will do at an event. As a player myself i found that i played better at certain venues than others. This could be down to certain reasons; psychologically, court or maybe just bad draws. Good to look at to get some long odd winners.

4. Court surface and game-style

For those of you that don't know much about tennis i will list the various court surfaces and what effect they have

Clay- Slow courts that have a high bounce and the ball is slowed down. Movement on these courts involves sliding and is tough to change direction. Mainly played on in warmer countries and is suited by players with good movement and play with heavy top-spin ground strokes.

Grass- Grass courts are very quick with a low bounce. Points are very quick. This surface has changed a lot in the last few years and has taken away the serve and volley style of play slightly. These courts are suited to players who have big serves and hold their own service on a regular basis. Players who hit the ball hard and flat are very well suited to this surface

Outdoor hard- Outdoor hard courts are the medium between clay and grass. The bounce is quite even and outdoors they are reasonably slow. All round players like this surface but is slightly favored by the bigger hitters.

Indoor hard- Indoor hard plays similarly to outdoor but is quicker due to there not being and eco factors. Players suited to hitting a big ball and have a good serve hold percentage often do well inside.

The court surface that is being played on makes a massive difference to the result of a match. Someone like  Guillermo Canas would be heavily favored on a clay court against John Isner because of his consistent ground-strokes from the back of the court however if this match was played on grass i would back Isner because of his massive serve and great service holding record.

5. Injuries

If a player has been injured recently or is just coming back from a long term injury they will often loose their first few matches as they are not used to being back in a match situation. Often you will find players who have been injured can still have a high ranking due to performances before the injury. This can often be a good opportunity for an outsider win.

well guys thats all i could think of for now. Bare with me as it is my first time doing this and i will try to be as detailed as possible.

open to any questions i will do my best to answer

many thanks

dj

Thanks Joker

good to see somebody else with an interest in tennis. I have been beting tennis for around a year and noticed i was winning a hell of a lot more than i was loosing. So i have now decided to take it a little more seriously.

I dont intend to mae a career of it however i can see myself making a regular second icome fro it. Maybe £10-£15 a day. Not bad realy. If things did start going really well though i would definately loo to invest a lot more.

were do you coach?

Na im in Rainy England. LOL  Just finishing off my last year at school before i begin my coaching career.

The reason i picked Tipsarevic is that he is a really firey player. you never know what you will get from him. Also Djokovic sometimes after having a few good tournaments in a row can loose his early round matches in smaller tournaments. Another contributing factor is the odds. The best i found were 1.08 which is ridiculous. just not worth the bet
