OK I've got it to work.  

I first saved the default avatar picture of the guys shadow in a box (From Profile) and opened it to find out it was 65 X 65 Pixels.

Assuming this is max i resized my old Avatar to that size and it worked!!! Quality isn't quite there as the original but its no big deal.

So if any one has this kind of issue it might help to know 65 X 65 pixels is max.
