What would happen if they didn't charge 5% vig on the banker bet at the bac table? Could everyone just flatbet there way to regular profit, with their newfound "edge". How long would it take for that "edge" to manifest itself?

I actually think that the casinos would make MORE money from the game if they stopped charging the 5% vig, as the fools would come with their short bankrolls assuming that all they would have to do to win regular is sit down and just bet on banker.

This doesn't actually answer your question, but it is related and I thought you might find it of interest (everything to follow comes from the WizardofOdds.com and takes into account the 5% commission):

Every baccarat table will have plenty of scorecards and pencils for the players to keep track of the outcome of every hand. Most players will do so religiously and carefully analyze their card for trends as the winning hand switches back and forth from the banker to the player. This is a big waste of time! The smart player will bet on the banker every time and leave the scorecards alone.  <<< Here is why that is true:

House edge for 8 deck Baccarat: 1.06% on the banker bet, 1.24% on the player bet, and 14.36% on the tie

House edge for 6 deck Baccarat: 1.06% on the banker bet, 1.24% on the player bet, and 14.44% on the tie.

House edge for 1 deck Baccarat: 1.01% on the banker bet, 1.29% on the player bet, and 15.75% on the tie.

rjeaton1,

The only thing i can add is my own suspicion that the once-standard figures of 1.17% for the banker-bet, and the 1.36% for the player-bet house-edges have been "artificially" lowered under the guise of taking into account ties.

Well we don't take into account how fast/slow the games are being dealt on any given day, how often we play, etc.  So why bother with the infrequent tie?

stavros,

Things like that HAVE been tried, usually for promotional purposes, sometimes by experimentation, and infrequently by accident (in other games, etc).  What happened was a convergence of a lot of high-limit professional players.

There's a casino in my area here which used to, and could still have, a baccarat-game with the commission rounded down to the nearest dollar... the commission on a winning $35-dollar banker-bet was $1.

Commission is usually taken on a winning banker when the bankers cards total 6. Never seen it done the way spike mentions. Most online casinos seem to take the normal 5% as it's easier to payout being electronic.
