Pro Gambler......?

How about this for a question........Can a person be a 'pro gambler' (Casino, table games) and be in the red year after year? Can that person still be considered a pro?

Its like a trick question. .  The answer could be right from both sides.  i would more than likely say no.  You cant be a "professional" and always lose.

I have known professional card counters to be in the red for like 3 months or so at the beginning of a year.

Also some professional horseracing guys like Andy Beyer used to play in the exotic pools a lot. This means he was always looking for the big payout. He would strike a few times a year and that would make him his profit for the year. So it is more than likely that he was down for prolonged periods before the big hit came.

If he/she is overall in the plus.  A lot depends on reputation and relationship with other players/casino management.

I could understand the concern if he/she is a "stand-alone" gambler losing year after year, but say the person is part of a team and loses to benefit the team, like "playing the patsy" so your teammate(s) could win big when the conditions become favorable.

How can all gamblers die broke when they are varying degrees of gamblers.

Someone who puts on a £5 football coupon every sat**day is a gambler, it does not mean he his going to die broke (unless he works in China, lol)

It's fair to say a high percentage of pathological gamblers will die broke.  Incidentally, that does not just mean they go broke because they keep losing a fortune at the tables/track etc...

@pins.... Did you work in the gambling industry. It sounds like you have a had a high exposure to mug punters on a frequent basis. I know a few guys who work in the industry who say it's all a mugs game. They say that because the majority of people they see coming in to gamble everyday do not have a scooby (clue) what they are doing and blow the lot.

Maybe pro gambler is a misnomer. Dorks is a better way to describe those  chaps.

you might be very smart. and gamble sensiblely. but the danger is you win 50 dollars and the gambling bug takes over
and you throw caution to the winds and gamble like a madman. it happens all the time just stand at a roulette table and the greed takes over.

I guess it depends on how many years in a row he is losing and whether he is lost his entire bankroll. If he lost his entire bankroll, then i think he need to change his approach to the game.

From my opinion he can be considered as a pro if he is still in profits (over a long run of course).
