Then just play the column of the number extracted.
Just play it at least for 5 spins.

Does that mean you have to wait for the number 18 to be spun before you can bet. That could take a while.
Or do you just wait for 2 consecutive numbers and then bet the column of the second number ?

Yes, you just wait first for 18 to spun, then bet on the column of the next spun number.
That can take a while as you say, but you can track different tables at the same time.
