Hold'em is a tricky game, and it's really difficult to gauge whether you're playing well, or not, simply because it has that "any crap hand can win" luck factor.

On the subject of bonuses, there are differences between say, Pacific Poker Bones, which tend to encourage you to play at higher limits (bonuses are usually worked out on the amount you stake) and the Inter/Will Hill/Empire/Party which are paid on either the number of hours you play, or the number of hands completed.  Clearly, as a novice, you need the latter.

There's also a subtle, currency related difference in bonuses.  If you play at William Hill's GB£ site, you get £5 an hour, but at the us$ site it's $5 an hour.  This is a significant difference with the £ approaching $1. 90

It's might be worth noting that the wager logic sites often email you re additional bonus on certain days of the month, like say, an extra $10 for pocket queens.  They also give bad beat bones and royal flush hand-outs.  It's unlikely that you'll ever get a royal, (I did once, but Murphy's law had me at another site that didn't pay the damn bonus. ) Anyway, the best thing to do, is be patient, and wait until they're paying these special, date specific bonuses, and only play whilst you're getting your £5 per hour, and only play at the $1/$2 tables.  This technique should ensure that you don't lose too much at hold'em, and you might win a bit, even if you're a novice.  BTW, I don't follow my own advice.  But it would be the most logical thing to do.

"Big bet" means the larger bet in a fixed limit game. . .  in a $10/$20 game, the big bet is $20.

How much you can make of course depends on the "quality" of the competition, and how you win pots -- win several pots beating one opponent in a tight game, win one pot in a lose game against many opponents.  In lower limit Los Angeles games you might only be dealt 20 hands an hour, with everybody playing ever hand.  If you are playing right, you won't play very many (meaning you wouldn't win very many too) but when you win you win huge pots.  In higher limit online games, it's not uncommon to face one opponent, where what you both basically do is split up the blinds.  These different roads might even lead to the same profit an hour.

Personally I never think about money wagered as long as I stay within my bankroll.  Then you just decide which game is most profitable to you, or has other reasons to play (most player's brains and stomachs would be better off making $40. 05 an hour in a passive game than $40. 06 an hour in a wild game).  [/color]

Before I started playing roulette I played quite lot poker on line and what I can say is:

- in poker very importans is bankroll management (as in roulette as well) in cash game you should use about 25-30 buy in bankroll at least it mean that when you play stakes where you take to the table 10$ you should have at least 250$-300$ bankroll

-some may don't agree but poker is a game of skills. In short term luck matters but in long term skill is what matter only. In long term you and your opponents have the same quantity of luck. It derive from probability. Once your aces are beaten by for example pocket 55 but in other hand your 55 will beat somebody's aces.

- on microlimits you can play ABC of poker which means tight play, play good starting hands, bets and raises with made hands which are two pairs and higher and you should be in profit. Most beginners play too many starting hands they play too lo ose. Almost every beginner play almost always when have at least one ace in his hand or even king or Queen.

- I saw some of you use some kind of progression like in roulette for example playing SnG for 1$ if they lose play higher for 2$ and so on. These kind of progression are bad at least from few reasons. On diffrent levels skills of the players may differ very much. if you can't win Sng or any other game for 1$ it is less perhaps that you win game for 5$ or 10$. Besides on higher limits players have more skills and most of them use tracking programs to gather information about players game to beat them more easy. Easy example: 1 player play every second hand the other one play only 1 per 30 hands. Both of them go all in pre flop when playing. You have pair of Tens. If you would play against first opponent you would win in most of cases, against second you would lose. This kind of play is very easy to see without any program but those programs gather information more more detailed about players game besides when you play few tables at the same time then those programs help much. They are allowed and used very often on higher stakes. You can try them (Poker Tracker, Holdem Manager) they have trials version.

-if you say about bonuses many poker rooms give you rake back for example FTP 27% but you have to be registered through some affiliate. Poker Stars don give rake back but you can use points to play in many satelites to tournaments and if you win and unregister then you have so called tournaments dollars which you can sell for 99% worth.

When you say about bad beats bonus. They are really huge but playing on the tables which offer it you pay higher rake which mean poker site take more money form the pot for themselves than it take form normal tables. I play at Pacific Poker. There are not many players comparing for example to Poker Stars but there are many weak players because it is mostly gambling site.

As you said everybody have to find his own game which suits most and If you would like to play poker seriously you should find some poker forum where you can develop you poker skills and get more informations about this game.
