Hi there all

I recently read a post on here that asked how many people know the roulette wheel number layout. I was surprised that it seemed very few knew it intimately. It must be difficult to use vb or a computer etc and get bets on in time if you need to refer to a diagram prior to placing bets. Anyway i thought that i'd share my tips for memorising the european wheel for any one whose interested. Note that it will either make sense or look completely way too complex! It worked for me.

1. The aim is to know it intimately, start by understanding the numbers in order (CW and CCW), then understanding what numbers are opposite each other then get a feel for 1/4 turns, then1/8 turns over time. You can learn most of it easily enough at home, then use real wheel play/observations to make your understanding intuitive and automatic.

2. To learn the CW starting at zero first recognise that the numbers generally (very generally!) rise and fall high and low etc and that small and high evens are on the RHS of the wheel (generally) etc. You can also use reds and blacks as mental references mostly by sometimes viewing them as a grup.

3. Start by memorising 17,34 at 3oclock, 5,10 at 6 oclock and 9,22 at 9 oclock.

4. Then learn groups of 4-6 at a time. The key i believe is to use memory tricks - link numbers by using wierd little thoughts that only pertain to one pair. Eg 0, 32, 15, 19, 4 . I took 32 as given, then the trick here for me was the numeric relation b/n 15, 19 and 4, ie 19-4 = 15. Once i used such a memory trick i never forget them. Then comes 21 (the trick for that is that 19 and 21 are separated by 2 spots (both on the wheel and on any counting sequence). Then 2 separated by 2 from 4 (same counting sequence relationship as 19 and 21). Then 25 - i think i just memorised that as coming after 2. Then 17 and 34 (remember are at the quarter turn) and 17 is half of 34. Then continue the even smalls, we've had 2 and 4, next is 6. 6 and 27 i learned just as apair (ie no trick). We already know that 5,10 is at 6 oclock, so my next trick was to use the blacks as a group 13,11,8,10 - the trick is that they fall in order of size, except 10 is fixed at 6 oclock. These are iterspersed with the red numbers containing a three and they also fall in order of size 36, 30,23. So you get 13, 36, 11, 30, 8, 23, 10. Next we know its 5. Then 24 which is one up from 23 the otherside of the 6 oclock grouping. 2 The next mental trick is that were approaching the 2/3 way around the wheel and 2/3 of 24 is 16. 2/3 is 0.66666666 which repeats, just like the next number 33! Then after all those fractions lets get back to basics - 1. Then 20 and 14 i memorised with no trick. 14 is almost half of 30 and then 31 is just over double 30 (i know its stupid, but once i thought of it i never forgot it!). Then 9 and 22 are the 9 oclock (remember 9 and 9). Then 9,22,18 (trick: 9*2=18). Then 29 which is 1 digit more for each digit of the 1 and 8 that make up 18. Then 7. Then 28 which is separated by 1 spot from 29. Then memorised the rest i think.

5. The you want to learn what is opposite each number. To do this i again used the zero and the 5,10 as references. If you want to know what's opposite 7, count that 7 is 6 pockets from zero. Then count 6 pockets from 5 in same direction. Answer = 13. If you do this for all numbers (including fudging a couple by one pocket) you find that 1 to 18 are opposed by 19-36, which is really neat:

1 - 21              7 - 36           13 - 29
2 - 20              8 - 35           14 - 25
3 - 23              9 - 34           15 - 24
4 - 33              10 - 26         16 - 19
5 - 32              11 - 28          17 - 31
6 - 22              12 - 30          18 - 27

The cool thing is that all smalls are opposite a high. I know that on the wheel one number is actually opposite two numbers, but this simplifies the learning process. So now you use mantal tricks again to memorise the pairs. 1-21 are both the lowest with the 1 digit at the end (lowest on each side of the pairing table, ie smalls, highs). 2-20, same sort of relationship as 1-21, 2-20 both are the lowest with 2 as first digit. Then 23. 4-33 and 6-22 relate via a 2/3 trick. 5-32 is easy because 5=3+2. Then on to column 2. The first three should be obvious - 7,8,9 pair with falling 36,35,34. Then 10-26 i just memorised. The we just add 2, then aother 2 - so from 10-26, we get 11-28 and 12-30. Then the next column starts with unlucky 13, so minus 1 for badluck from the last pair (12-30) to get 13-29. Then 14-25 and 15-24 are a bit of a neat number reversal trick with the 4's and 5s switching. Then 16-19 are easy b/c the 6 and 9 are like a mirror image of each other. Then 17-31 i just memorised. Finally 18-27 is one digit up (1 to 2) and one digit down (8 to 7).

There you have it. Clear as mud? Anyway when i studied each relationship of mental trick i learned it all in a couple of days just using 5 or 6 15 min sessions throughout then day.  Once you've learned it all you dont rely on the tricks unless you get stuck.

Sorry i havnt looked at Americal wheel.

Id be interested to know if this type of thing works for others.

Mr Chips

There are a variety of ways to remember numbers and people with good memories often use images to link numbers together
and they can memorise a series of numbers in seconds. I think I would find your method difficult, but the same can be said for
my method, as I listed the numbers CW 0 to 26 down on paper and memorised them like a long telephone number, how dull and
boring is that :scratch_ones_head:

Mr Chips

Shorty

I just decided to write them all down one day to see if I had actually memorised it.

It's actually pretty easy if you play enough.

Nice to see shasta now you only need a dominant drop :)
