Very true. Humans are pattern finding machines by nature - probably a part of our evolutionary process. Look at most things for long enough and you'll find patterns that don't really exist. I found this when studying the LW methodology and so decided to call it quits on the whole LW thing because of these reasons. And for concerns about my sanity...!  :P

Seems to me to be quite natural to look for patterns

It's called "learning from experience".

If we didn't we'd still be living in caves.

Finding patterns can be productive if they occur consistantly.. It doesn't matter if they're in your head or are real, they can still be exploited.

This ascertion is too simplistic. It may be true for roulette but just up to a certain point. Patterns may help you achieve the unimaginable like +4.11 standard deviation at Baccarat:
